Frequently Asked Questions – Refrigeration Components
What is the difference between a TXV and a fixed orifice expansion device?
A thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) is a modulating device that continuously adjusts refrigerant flow based on the suction line superheat, providing precise control across a wide range of operating conditions. A fixed orifice (such as a piston or capillary tube) delivers a constant refrigerant flow rate and is simpler but less efficient under variable load conditions. TXVs are preferred for higher-efficiency systems and applications with variable loads.
How often should a filter drier be replaced in an HVAC system?
A filter drier should be replaced any time the refrigerant system is opened for service, after a compressor burnout, or when moisture contamination is suspected. In normal operation without system opening, filter driers can last the life of the equipment. However, a clogged or saturated drier will cause pressure drop, reduced system capacity, and can damage the compressor, so replacement is recommended whenever the system is serviced.
What causes a refrigeration compressor to fail prematurely?
Common causes of premature compressor failure include refrigerant flooding (liquid refrigerant entering the compressor), inadequate lubrication due to oil migration, electrical issues such as voltage imbalance or single-phasing, overheating from high discharge temperatures, and contamination from moisture or non-condensables. Proper system design, correct refrigerant charge, and regular maintenance are the best preventive measures.
What refrigerants are commonly used in residential HVAC and mini split systems?
R-410A has been the dominant refrigerant in residential HVAC and mini split systems for the past two decades. However, due to its high global warming potential (GWP), R-410A is being phased out in favor of lower-GWP alternatives such as R-32 and R-454B. New equipment manufactured after January 1, 2025 in the US must use refrigerants with a GWP below 750, making R-32 and R-454B increasingly common in new mini split systems.
What is a hard start kit and when is it needed?
A hard start kit (also called a start capacitor and relay kit) is an electrical component that provides an extra boost of torque to the compressor motor during startup. It is needed when the compressor struggles to start due to low voltage, high back pressure, a worn compressor, or when the system is connected to a generator or limited power source. Hard start kits can extend compressor life by reducing the electrical stress of repeated startup cycles.
