What size mini split system do I need?
Mini split sizing is measured in BTUs and depends on the square footage of the space, ceiling height, insulation quality, and climate zone. As a general rule, 9,000 BTU covers approximately 350-450 sq ft, while 24,000 BTU covers 1,000-1,200 sq ft. A Manual J load calculation provides the most accurate sizing for professional installations.
What is the difference between single-zone and multi-zone mini split systems?
A single-zone system connects one outdoor condenser to one indoor air handler, ideal for conditioning a single room or area. A multi-zone system connects one outdoor unit to multiple indoor air handlers (typically 2-8 zones), allowing independent temperature control in each zone. Multi-zone systems are more cost-effective than installing multiple single-zone units when conditioning several rooms.
Are MRCOOL DIY mini split systems truly self-installable?
MRCOOL DIY series systems use pre-charged line sets with quick-connect fittings, eliminating the need for a refrigerant manifold gauge set or vacuum pump during installation. Homeowners can install these systems without an HVAC license in most jurisdictions. However, electrical connections must still comply with local codes and may require a licensed electrician.
What components are required for a complete mini split installation?
A complete mini split installation requires the outdoor condenser unit, indoor air handler(s), copper line set (pre-charged or standard), communication and power wiring, a condensate drain line, a wall sleeve or line set cover, and a dedicated electrical circuit with disconnect. For non-DIY systems, a refrigerant charge and vacuum procedure are also required.
Do mini split systems provide both heating and cooling?
Yes. Most modern mini split systems are heat pumps that provide both cooling in summer and heating in winter.
