How to Install a Ductless Mini Split: Step-by-Step Guide
Installing a ductless mini split system is a manageable project for experienced DIYers, especially with the MRCOOL DIY series which features pre-charged line sets that eliminate the need for a vacuum pump and refrigerant charging equipment.
Tools You'll Need
- Drill with hole saw (2.5–3 inch)
- Level and stud finder
- Wire stripper and electrical connectors
- Torque wrench (for traditional systems)
- Vacuum pump and manifold gauges (for non-pre-charged systems)
Step 1: Choose the Right Location
Mount the indoor air handler on an exterior wall, high up near the ceiling for optimal airflow. Ensure there are no obstructions within 6 inches of the unit and that the wall can support the unit's weight.
Step 2: Mount the Bracket and Run the Line Set
Use a level to mount the wall bracket securely into studs. Drill the pass-through hole at a slight downward angle toward the exterior to ensure proper condensate drainage.
Step 3: Connect and Start Up
Connect the line set, electrical connections, and drain line per the manufacturer's instructions. For MRCOOL DIY systems, simply connect the pre-charged quick-connect fittings — no tools required.
