Installation & Product Tips
- O/B Terminal: The O/B terminal controls the reversing valve on your heat pump. Set O/B to "O" for Carrier, Trane, and most brands (energize on cooling). Set to "B" for Rheem/Ruud (energize on heating). Check your heat pump manual.
- Emergency Heat: In cold weather, if the heat pump cannot maintain temperature, the thermostat can activate emergency/auxiliary heat (electric resistance strips). This is normal operation.
- Auxiliary Heat Lockout: Some thermostats have an outdoor temperature lockout for auxiliary heat. Set this to prevent the backup heat from running when the heat pump is sufficient.
- C-Wire: Heat pump thermostats require a C-wire for continuous power. Verify your wiring includes a C-wire before installation.
- Balance Point: The balance point is the outdoor temperature below which the heat pump cannot efficiently heat. Below this point, auxiliary heat supplements the heat pump.

How is a heat pump thermostat different from a regular thermostat?
Heat pump thermostats have an O/B terminal to control the reversing valve that switches the heat pump between heating and cooling modes. They also manage auxiliary/emergency heat stages. Using a standard thermostat on a heat pump can cause the system to heat when it should cool, or vice versa.
What is the difference between O and B terminal settings?
The O setting energizes the reversing valve during cooling (most brands: Carrier, Trane, Lennox, York). The B setting energizes the reversing valve during heating (Rheem, Ruud, some older systems). Incorrect O/B setting will cause the heat pump to heat when cooling is called and vice versa. Check your heat pump's installation manual for the correct setting.
